Cameroon: Growth to 1.1% in the first quarter of 2017

With a moderate growth in gross domestic product (GDP) of 1.1%, in the first quarter of 2017, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS), Cameroon shows a slowdown in the rate of economic activity compared with in the same quarter of 2016, which had a fairly high level of 5.4%.

"The poor performance of the secondary sector, which recorded a negative contribution of 1.5 percentage points to growth, explains the underperformance," says the INS, adding that two branches contributed mainly to the decline in activity in this sector sector, namely: "Crude petroleum extraction" and "Buildings and public works".

On the supply side, however, the NSI reassures the good news comes from the primary sector, where all industries have performed well despite the slowdown observed in "industrial and exporting agriculture", which is still affected by the decline in cocoa prices. Similarly, all sectors of the tertiary sector are making positive contributions to growth, with the exception of "public administration, health and education", which is affected by a contraction in staff costs.

In terms of demand, growth in the first quarter of 2017 was attributable to the good performance of the private component of investment and final consumption, despite a decline in their public components. This is tempered by a slowdown in foreign trade, with a 0.7% drop in exports combined with a 4.1% increase in imports.
